When you need a heating engineer for something like a boiler installation or boiler repair, you want someone you can trust to come into your home and do the job properly. You want an affordable solution, and you want it at a time that is convenient to you. And sometimes you need it quickly, in the event of an emergency plumbing problem. You don't want unprofessional, unqualified and unreliable gas engineers coming into your home, potentially making the problem worse, overcharging you, or not bothering to turn up to the appointment in the first place.
Sadly, more than a million gas plumbing jobs are carried out each year by unqualified unregistered gas engineers that are not gas safe registered engineers. Not only is this illegal, but it is also highly dangerous. Poorly fitted gas plumbing, boilers, and central heating systems can be catastrophic, risking severe and costly damage to your home, as well as putting your life and the lives of your family in jeopardy.
All heating engineers & gas fitters at PlumbGuardian are vetted and rated and are listed on the Gas Safe register. PlumbGuardian is on hand to help you source the very best traders for the job, finding a local gas fitter or heating engineer that you can rely on.
With PlumbGuardian you can rest assured that all work will be carried out safely, competently, and efficiently. Whether it's a simple power flush or a new boiler quote we are unbeaten on price. Our tradesmen will clean up the working area, leaving your home as neat as when they arrived. We take customer service seriously and pride ourselves on providing heating engineers who deliver the highest standards of work.
The Council For Registered Gas Installers was established in 1970 as a way to regulate gas fitters and ensure that they were adequately equipped to perform the role. It was a voluntary scheme requiring members to hold a certificate of competence. This certificate was designed to guarantee that any gas installation work was undertaken by an engineer with the right level of knowledge and experience for the job at hand.
Although the scheme was voluntary, from 1991 to 2009 it became a legal requirement for all gas engineers to be CORGI registered before undertaking any gas fitting work.
However, in 2009 this responsibility was handed over to the Gas Safe Register.
The Gas Safe Register is a system of registration for gas fitters that covers the UK, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. It is a legal requirement for all gas engineers in the UK to be registered with Gas Safe. Any gas engineers who are not registered are breaking the law and should not be undertaking any work relating to heating, boilers, or pipework, regardless of how much experience they claim to have, and in spite of any claims that they are experts in their field. If they are not registered, they cannot work on your heating. It's as simple as that.
This register operates on behalf of the local Health & Safety Authority of each region and runs public safety campaigns to highlight the dangers of illegal and unsafe gas work and the risks of carbon monoxide in the home.
As well as providing licenses for qualified, professional heating engineers and gas fitters, Gas Safe investigates reports of illegal work and passes information to the relevant authority to pursue legal action.
No, it is not the same.
While the CORGI system had its merits, it was also open to abuse by a small number of businesses. However, this was enough to prompt swift action to ensure that, as far as possible, the general public was protected from illegal and unregistered heating engineers and gas fitters.
This is why CORGI was replaced by Gas Safe Registration. You should never allow anyone to work on your central heating system, pipes, or boiler unless they can prove that they are on the Gas Safe register.
Not every plumber is qualified to perform certain plumbing jobs, especially in relation to gas work.
At the very least, they should hold a qualification in pipework, but there are many complex jobs involved in the plumbing and installation of gas pipes and boilers.
To ensure that the system works properly, each gas engineer is provided with a new ID card every year with a 7-digit licence number on the back.
When the plumber or gas engineer arrives at your home, always ask if you can check their ID card. Using this, you can either confirm their identity online using the 'check an engineer' tool or call on the freephone number 0800 408 5500.
You should also ask to see the engineer's job list to see if they are qualified to undertake the work entrusted to them.
The process couldn't be simpler - you can instantly get a price with a free online quote and (for more complicated jobs) an estimate before our heating adviser assesses your heating system via a video call or in-person visit. We'll either give you a fixed-priced quote or an estimate. For more complex jobs, call the company to discuss your needs, and we'll be happy to accommodate.
If you need more time, we'll get in touch later to explain how you can go ahead with the quote. Your heating adviser will give you a fixed price quote. If you're happy with it, simply let them know if you would like to go ahead and then leave everything to us.
We only install the latest A-rated boilers with smart controls, and these could save you between £200 and £600 a year. Many modern A-rated combi-boilers operate at up to 94% efficiency, which is why they are proving so popular. Replacing your old boiler with a combi boiler will soon save you more than the amount you invested in the boiler in the first place!
With our established contacts in the heating services business, we can source products from the very best boiler manufacturers (for example, Worcester Bosch) at competitive rates, which we pass on to our valued customers.
It all depends on the type of work involved.
Basically, plumbers will deal with your water system and appliances, including toilets, sinks, taps, and so on. These are usually regulated by the Water Safe register. Gas or heating engineers handle boiler installation, heating systems, hot water cylinders, thermostats, etc.
However, some plumbers will also be Gas Safe registered and will be able to work on certain jobs relating to boiler systems. Some will be qualified to tackle boiler installation, while others may not. The list of work they are allowed to do can be found on the back of their ID card.
Generally, they will be divided into different categories. Some will be qualified to work in domestic settings or industrial. Others will be cleared to work with LPG or natural gas. Another group will be allowed to work on fires, cookers, boilers, and so on.
